Stone Tape

Part of a series of paintings documenting the walks around my home in the South Downs.

The footpath up to Brinksole between Petworth and Low Heath in West Sussex. This footpath is a sunken lane or holloway, and was once part of the main road out of Petworth. The title refers to a 1970s television drama by Nigel Kneale where a team of scientists investigate the phenomenon of a building acting like a storage medium, recording and replaying events from the past. 

The old main road could replay dramatic scenes of carriages and highwaymen, creatures fighting for survival but now is haunted by dog walkers.
